In honor of the 2nd annual Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship Award, presented by Sands Cares, we are featuring our 12 Sands Cares Heroes, finalists for the Adelson Citizenship Award. Las Vegas Sands established the award to recognize Team Members across all of our regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to local communities and important causes. The award was created to honor the Adelson family’s long-term commitment to philanthropy and the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company. The winner will be announced Wednesday, April 25.
Here are a few words from Lourdes Mia De La Cruz Cabalida of The Venetian Macao on what Sands Cares and volunteering means to her:
I cannot say enough how thankful I am to be part of Sands Cares because I was given the opportunity to be of service to different organizations here in Macao. This past year I have focused on the Macau Special Olympics, where we assisted in the physical checkups for members and demonstrated how to brush their teeth properly to prevent tooth decay. I also volunteered with various institutions for the elderly, where we spent time with the elderly, playing games with them, but what touched my heart the most is that it evoked memories of my parents that someday, I will be able to take care of them too.
My first experience through Sands Cares was spending time with children. That experience made me appreciate life more and let me enjoy volunteering as the children were very lovely and heartwarming.
For me, the impact Sands Cares has on our community is truly remarkable and life-changing because it carries a positive spirit of love, help and care. With helping hands from all of us, the spirit of unity, nothing is impossible. Sands Cares has had a profound influence on me and my fellow Team Members because I consider Macao my second home and where I belong. Through volunteering, my sense of belonging is strengthened because I’m giving my care and love to my beloved community, and I’m happy that people can share my joy and happiness. That’s how I appreciate the value of life and the meaning of my journey in this world.
It’s a unique gift to have the Adelsons’ spirit of giving as the inspiration of Sands Cares because it’s a beautiful blessing from above. I’m very grateful and thankful to be part of this company and for being able to spread this spirit to people I know without holding back. Because we have so many great experiences, it’s very hard to pick one favorite volunteer opportunity in 2017 because many of them are equally impressive, but I think the Hygiene Kit Build with Clean the World, the Caritas Bazaar, the Little Big Club meal with members of the Macau Special Olympics, and the TrailHiker clean-up task in the wake of Typhoon Hato have been my favorites. I’m so blessed to have been given so many volunteer opportunities to contribute to the community.
All I can say is that life is so short and life is precious. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to reach your goals and realize your passions. Explore more in your life with amazing, fantastic, fun and loving experiences. Learn to embrace your individuality. There’s always a unique experience waiting for you. You must seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as it can change your life forever. Transforming your life into a meaningful journey requires a lifelong commitment. Sands Cares means a lot to me because it helps me become a better person in my community, as a mother, a wife, a daughter, a friend and an employee. I have become more aware of what’s important in my life. Besides working an 8-hour shift every day, I have learned to value different aspects of the lives of others. The Sands Cares program definitely helps me find the true essence of my journey in life.
