Tackling Food Waste in a Whole New Way

Over the next few weeks, we will take a closer look at the 2014 Sands ECO360 Addendum that Las Vegas Sands released in August. Sustainability is a part of the culture here at LVS, and we are excited to share some of the ways we are implementing our initiatives at our properties around the world. Today, we are focusing on our waste management practices.

In 2014, we reduced food waste by 620 tons by introducing food waste digesters in Macao, Singapore and Bethlehem, PA. The innovative technology of these food digesters is able to process food waste, including meat and dairy, into grey water which can be safely discharged down the drain. The diversion of this waste results in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from methane, which is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Additionally, this process allows for the reduction of emissions associated with waste transportation from our properties to the disposal site.

Next week, we will take a closer look at sustainable development currently taking place in Macao. The 2014 Sands ECO360 Addendum can be downloaded here: http://www.sands.com/sands-eco-360/our-news/environmental-report.html
