Marina Bay Sands Team Members Share: What Volunteerism Means to Me

Passionate about working and interacting with people, Tan Wei Lin feels right at home in the Human Resources department at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) as a Talent Operations Officer.  For many, Wei Lin is the first friendly face you meet during your on-boarding process as a new Team Member, but for others, she is the person that handles HR-related issues.  Enjoying the spectrum of people she meets daily, Wei Lin values her experiences helping Team Members. This passion for people is also the reason why she actively volunteers and gives back to her community.

“I used to see volunteerism as a chore, something compulsory in school for Community Involvement Program hours,” she said.  “After I started working at Marina Bay Sands, I wanted to be more involved with my community.  Volunteering allows me to reconnect with those in need and puts things into perspective for me.”

Wei Lin is one of the top 10 Sands for Singapore volunteers for 2017.  Her journey began before she became a full-time Team Member at MBS.  As a temporary Team Member, she volunteered at an assisted living facility with her department during Christmas.  The memory of how her department made the effort to set aside time together, despite their hectic schedules, to participate in Sands for Singapore activities, instilled in her the importance of contributing and volunteering.  Marina Bay Sands through Sands for Singapore and Las Vegas Sands through Sands Cares, its corporate giving program, encourage Team Members to volunteer in the communities in which work and live and to be good corporate citizens.  Through these events, Team Members are encouraged to give back and donate their time to causes important to them. 

“I’m appreciative that our company has a platform like Sands for Singapore (Sands Cares) for Team Members to participate in activities easily,” said Wei Lin.  “Not only do you get to help others, but I believe you also learn more about yourself.  I realized how fortunate I was to have a family to guide me through life – the only difference between myself and our beneficiaries was the support and mentoring I received while growing up.”

Making a personal goal to volunteer for at least one Sands for Singapore activity every quarter, she is now a familiar face to fellow volunteers.  She recalled one of her most meaningful encounters with beneficiaries during an event in 2016 where she met at-risk teenagers who taught her to be thankful for the simple things in life and to not take anything for granted.

“Despite their scars, they still embrace living life fully. I just hope that I was able to make an impact on their lives, just like how they did to me,” she added.

Even though Wei Lin finds it challenging to set time aside for volunteerism, she is grateful for the unique opportunities and supportive environment at MBS, which allows her to further develop her passion for people.

“One of my role models is my manager, Mohd Noor Spono, who leads by example and encourages us to participate in volunteerism activities,” she said.  “In fact, he was one of our Sands Cares Heroes last year! I also learned that volunteering is more fun when you are bonding and growing with people you know. I’d encourage my fellow Team Members to gather your colleagues and do your part.  The happiest people are those who give more, not get more.”
