Sands Academy Elevate Series: Jose Gomez

As part of its learning and development training, Sands Academy established the Elevate Series for managers and above to assist Team Members in leading their departments effectively and efficiently.  The monthly classes help leaders manage their teams in conflict management, accountability and team building, allowing Team Members to reevaluate their efforts within their departments.

“I have 15 Team Members in my department and our main task is to touch up and maintain 15 suites per day at both The Venetian and The Palazzo,” Jose Gomez, assistant manager in Facilities, said.  “We fix the plumbing, replace broken marble and any fix issues with the carpet.  I get my Team Members to each suite, depending on what needs to be done and the Team Member’s expertise.  We have a lot of people doing various things, so it’s important to understand the team and get them to the right place for the right job.”

Gomez was encouraged to take the classes by his supervisor, knowing the value of the classes and what it can do for large teams at the properties.  Managing large teams has been the emphasis of most of the Elevate Series classes, establishing key methods for managers to follow to increase productivity and learn how to manage various personalities.

“The class that stood out for me was one that focused on dealing with Team Members to help them become better and teaching them new techniques of how to manage their work,” Gomez said.  “It’s not about pointing out their faults but rather putting yourself in their shoes and speak to them as you would want to be spoken to.  The key is to look at issues differently because a solution may work for one person, but it won’t work for another.”

Gomez said that the Elevate Series opened up his awareness to treat people differently depending on their strengths and weaknesses.  The goal for his department is to get along and do what’s best for the hotel as a whole.  He says some the key messages throughout the series have been how Team Members should deal with each other to have a productive environment.

“We all have to work together to accomplish what we need to do every day,” he said.  “I’ve learned how to deal with issues and even anticipate future issues.  We have high-level professionals unique to their trade and they are experts, but we also have to deal with a lot of opinions.  It can get difficult to deal with, but with classes like Elevate, the company is preparing us to deal with issues that exist or may arise.  The classes have good energy, they lift us up and it's a high-level, practical and useful training.  I love this part of professional growth and that the company wants to invest in us.   We all have the same goal and that’s to have the number one hotel.  I think that sets us apart from everyone else.”
