Sands Bethlehem Donates Linens and Toiletries to Local Organizations

As part of Sands Cares and Sands ECO360, Sands Bethlehem has found a way to repurpose and redistribute excess inventory, benefitting local charities, as well as the environment.

“We knew that we wanted to discard items in a way that helped others in the surrounding area,” said Susan Stachowski, Community Relations Coordinator at Sands Bethlehem.  “On top of their daily assignments, our Team Members find the time to sort through the hotel’s inventory and determine what can be pulled and donated.  They’re definitely dedicated to the cause.’’

Since 2015, unusable linens, towels and toilet paper are collected and set aside by the housekeeping and laundry departments.  Last month, 40 large trash bags were brimming with sheet sets, blankets, comforters and towels. Close to 1,000 bags were filled with toilet paper rolls.  Charitable organizations such as The Hispanic Center of the Lehigh Valley, Victory House, New Creation UCC/Simple Quilts and the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley all benefit from the donations. On the last Friday of every month, the organizations filter through the bags and determine what items are needed.

“We try to donate the same amount every month,” explained Stachowski. “Sometimes it’s more, sometimes less – but normally it’s pretty comparable.  Because of this initiative, local food pantries were able to start offering items that they weren’t able to in the past.  Keeping the items out of a landfill is an added bonus.”
