Las Vegas Sands helped sponsor the GreenPower Teacher Training Workshop held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP). The event was held in partnership with Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and Republic Services who all came together to provide a unique “behind the scenes” perspective on sustainability from the eyes of local business stakeholders.
The focus of the event was to conduct sustainability related training for Nevada’s teachers, which can then be incorporated into their curriculum helping to spread the message of resource conservation. The training sessions were held by DRI and NDEP who focused on their Green boxes. The Green boxes are kits which can be checked out and delivered to schools and contain a full array of lessons around a given topic such as energy conservation, water conservation, and recycling.
The sponsors of the event supported this training in a number of ways. From RTC providing an ultra-efficient natural gas powered bus for the event to a tour of Republic’s recycling facilities and culminating in a tour of The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo’s LEED certified properties. While on the tour the teachers were able to experience the strides being taken by the resort in the realm of sustainability, including everything from energy and water efficiency upgrades such as LED lighting upgrades, nano-filtration system which repurposes non-potable groundwater for irrigation use; campus’s waste minimization and recycling efforts; electric car charging stations for guests and employees; community engagement efforts etc. The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo were proud to help sponsor this event and feel that it is an integral part in helping to increase local and national awareness around the importance of sustainability.
