In pursuit of a career in Human Resources, Quintessa Tan began her career at Marina Bay Sands in April 2014. With hard work and on-property training resources, Tan successfully applied for an internal transfer from Credit to Human Resources in March 2016.
“I’ve always known that I’ve had a passion for HR, however I saw the job opportunity posting for Credit when I was looking for a job after graduation,” Tan said. “The idea of working at an Integrated Resort was appealing and I decided to apply.”
With on-the-job training in Credit, she picked up skills quickly and acquired her Special Employee License (SEL). She was also able to meet guests from all over the world and that played a pivotal role in her love for her job, but the monthly shift hours meant that she had to forsake time spent with her family, especially during the holiday season.
“After two years, I decided to look for for other opportunities in HR,” she said. “I spoke with my fellow Team Members, and they told me about a job opening. It was great because I was encouraged and supported by my managers to take advantage of the opportunity and go to the interviews.”
Tan now manages Team Member Relations and assists her assigned business units with a variety of tasks. The transition from Credit to HR came with challenges that Tan embraced. She adapted previous service skills honed by interactions with guests to suit her new audience – Team Members.
“Despite the tight deadlines and challenging job scope, I’ve never been happier to be able to finally pursue a career in HR,” Tan said. “Being at an Integrated Resort definitely gave me exposure and we are lucky to be given chances to explore roles in different industries that we have here on property. I love the development here at Marina Bay Sands and the support from my supervisors has been the key to advancing.”
The various career development training programs offered at Marina Bay Sands also ensures that Team Members have the opportunity to enhance their skill sets. For Tan, knowing that she will be using Microsoft Excel in her new job, was able to choose an advanced Microsoft Excel training course for a smooth transition through the Sands Academy Training department.
