Las Vegas Sands invests in its Team Members and encourages them to take on opportunities to advance their careers within the hospitality industry. For Harikumar (son of) Sunmugham at Marina Bay Sands, it started in 2010, where he was as a Facilities Technician in the Dispatch Center, now known as Facilities Operations, before taking on his position as a project manager on the Information Services team.
“I was eager for exposure in something new while broadening my career prospects. This transfer was a good opportunity for me to learn and grow as well,” he explained.
He had to balance his time between work and a school as he pursued a degree in business.
“My bosses were so supportive – they let me adjust shifts so I can attend school in the day. After graduating, I secured a job transfer within the same department and became a Business Analyst for Facilities in 2012,” he said.
As a Business Analyst, Harikumar managed maintenance projects on a regular basis; he also worked closely with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) team as he supported Facilities for budgeting, processes, and forecasting. The relationship honed with FP&A allowed him to pursue a new opportunity – joining the FP&A team as a Senior Financial Analyst.
“The jump was huge – I used to only handle projects for one department, but being in FP&A meant I now work with almost all departments in Marina Bay Sands. I’m thankful that my new colleagues and managers had my back and made sure I understood what was going on,” Harikumar said.
In the face of this new pressure to adapt to this new challenge, Harikumar further acknowledged his team for helping him to tide over obstacles. “It’s really fun to work together. After merging with the Operational Evaluation & Analysis team, we continue to be motivated to work hard. The synergy of our two teams spoke to the high professionalism of our respective leaders,” he said.
While he has experience in handling projects from a financial perspective, Harikumar pushed his boundaries by transferring to his current position in Information Services. In his new role, his projects aim to enhance the property’s information technology processes and automation.
With internal transfers playing a pivotal part in Harikumar’s career journey at Marina Bay Sands, he firmly believes that Team Members should grasp opportunities to improve themselves.
“It’s important to define your own timeline. I’m willing to learn and am not afraid of trying new things. In a company as big as ours, I believe there will always be something, somewhere, that you can excel in. If you never try, you’ll never know!” he said.
