Las Vegas Sands Announces Recipient of Adelson Citizenship Award

Las Vegas Sands named May Wu Yee Mei the winner of The Mr. Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship Award presented by Sands Cares.  Wu works in Casino Operations at The Venetian Macao.  The award was established through Sands Cares, the company’s corporate giving program, to recognize Team Members across all regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to their local communities and important causes.  The award was created to honor the Adelson family’s long-term commitment to philanthropy and the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company.

The 12 finalists, named Sands Cares Heroes of the Year, were selected during the first quarter of 2018 out of 88 total nominations worldwide and were chosen by executives in their respective regions based on their volunteer efforts with Sands Cares and other outside organizations.  All finalists were invited to Las Vegas to attend a ceremony on April 25 to accept their Sands Cares Heroes Awards.

“Over the years I’ve been told by so many Team Members that the reason they like working for our company is because it feels like a family,” Sheldon Adelson, Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, said.  “And just like many families ours is guided by a set of shared values: pride, passion, integrity, dedication and excellence.  As you reflect on the evening I hope you are left with the same conclusion I have reached. This family is strong, the commitment to our values is secure, and our future is very bright.”

This past year, Wu was involved in various volunteer efforts such as Telephone Support Service Peng On Tung, an annual home visit and spring cleaning, visited elderly homes, where she and other Sands Cares Ambassadors sent New Year gift packs and helped them clean their homes. She also volunteered with Macao Holy House of Mercy, a food hamper distribution program for needy and elderly people, the Macau Special Olympics, where she assisted the doctors in carrying out a hearing test for needy people who had joined the Healthy Athlete Program.  Wu also volunteered with the Las Vegas Sands Global Hygiene Kit Build with Clean the World, packing hygiene kits.  The kits consist of recycled hygiene products that are then sent to developing countries in hopes of reducing hygiene-related illnesses.

“Sands Cares is very important to me and my fellow Team Members because it allows us to give back to our community, as well as to get up close and personal with those in need,” Wu said.  “We can also learn from them, and may one day realize how blessed we are through our interactions and by listening to their stories. It means a lot to me as it prompts me to think deeply to what extent I can give back to the community. Through volunteer work and giving back to the community, we are making this world a better place to live in. What we are doing right now is for the future and for our next generation. Volunteering makes me feel useful that I can give back to the community.”
