Q & A: Sands Cares Fresh Start Mobile Showers Powered by Clean the World Ron Reese, Las Vegas Sands Senior Vice President Global Communications and Corporate Affairs, Las Vegas Sands

Las Vegas Sands and Clean the World have announced a first-of-its-kind service in Las Vegas to help homeless people. The Sands Cares Fresh Start Mobile Showers Powered by Clean the World is a traveling hygiene unit that visits locations serving the homeless to provide showers, hygiene supplies and other resources. Made possible by a $250,000 grant from LVS, the Sands Cares Fresh Start Mobile Showers were unveiled in Las Vegas on July 27. The showers offer approximately 250 showers per week and will be located at community partner locations one day per week where clients will also have access to emergency shelter, food and clothing supplies, medical care and detoxification services. Partners include WestCare, CARE Complex, Nevada Homeless Alliance and the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. Las Vegas has the sixth largest population of homeless individuals among major cities and the third highest number of unaccompanied homeless youth. More than 80 percent of these youth are unsheltered – the highest rate in the nation.

What was the main reason in developing the Fresh Start Mobile Showers here in Las Vegas?

· Knowing Las Vegas has one of the highest homeless rates in the nation, it’s important to drive awareness. There is a problem, especially with teens and veterans in this community. The effort with the Fresh Start Mobile Showers is something that has been in discussion for a while. It addresses issues in the community and drives awareness all at the same time.

Why has Las Vegas Sands given time and money to this project?

· We have a broad commitment through our Corporate Social Responsibility and giving back to the communities in which we operate. It starts at the top with Mr. Adelson and his family. He has created a culture of family and giving. It means the world to me to work for Las Vegas Sands because of their willingness to give back here in the US and in Asia. There’s a sense of pride in the community throughout the organization. We also support the elimination of homelessness and support Clean the World through our multi-year partnership in global hygiene efforts.

What will the Fresh Start Mobile Showers provide within the community?

· It’s important to provide access to proper hygiene in the Las Vegas Valley. The mobile showers have been done in other markets, but it’s new to Las Vegas and it’s very important to have something like this in the area. It will provide showers and other resources to those in need throughout the community.

How did the partnership with Clean the World develop?

· Our relationship with Clean the World started when they were starting out here in Las Vegas. We worked with them to start recycling the soap out of our properties several years ago. The partnership has blossomed into Las Vegas Sands being one of Clean the World’s biggest donors. Our goal was to help make a difference through hygiene awareness and education through the building of hygiene kits with the recycled soap from our hotel rooms. Now, hygiene kits are being distributed in third world countries and disaster relief efforts around the world.
