In honor of the 2nd annual Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship Award, presented by Sands Cares, we are featuring our 12 Sands Cares Heroes, finalists for the Adelson Citizenship Award. Las Vegas Sands established the award to recognize Team Members across all of our regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to local communities and important causes. The award was created to honor the Adelson family’s long-term commitment to philanthropy and the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company. The winner will be announced Wednesday, April 25.
Here are a few words from Dorothea Portera of Sands Bethlehem on what Sands Cares and volunteering means to her:
In the past year, I have lent my support to Simple Quilts, New Creation UCC. Sands Bethlehem gave them our used linens and turned them into beautiful quilts for those in need. I organized the donation of sheets, pillow cases, bedspreads and blankets so Simple Quilts can use them as backs and blocks for their colorful tops on their quilts. I volunteer my time in helping them knot the quilts that they donate to local nursing homes, schools, shelters, veteran’s hospitals, and the local Red Cross. Perfect Fit is another program I’ve helped that is run by the YWCA of Allentown and I was able to help women get back on their feet by supplying them with a free outlet for a job interview. I’ve also volunteered with the East Side Memorial Little League where I helped promote their annual fundraising event. I help sell Opening Day raffle tickets, raffle calendars and sell hoagies.
My first volunteer opportunity with Sands Cares was at Donegan Elementary School, where I helped serve breakfast to students and their families at an awards ceremony where they were being honored for leadership and improved attendance. I also helped with Read Across America and other special events held at the school. These opportunities make the biggest difference in the community through Team Members’ collections of food and clothing for those in need. They support various organizations to help make a difference for others and it connects people to great causes. Through Sands Cares, good people and good causes get connected. We are able to give without the thought of getting something in return.
My favorite volunteering opportunities have been with Simple Quilts. It is so important to support our seniors and veterans in the Lehigh Valley. The abundance of materials we donate to Simple Quilts and all the people involved with the organization are so grateful for our donations and the people receiving the finished quilts are so happy to receive them. I believe that helping others is something that is bigger than yourself and delivering happiness to others is the true meaning of being a great citizen. I would tell fellow Team Members to sign up for everything they can because volunteering provides you with a sense of fulfillment. Sands Cares is a network of supporting a cause you feel strong about and making a difference for others.
