Sands Cares Hero of the Year: Susan Ng

In honor of the 2nd annual Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship Award, presented by Sands Cares, we are featuring our 12 Sands Cares Heroes, finalists for the Adelson Citizenship Award. Las Vegas Sands established the award to recognize Team Members across all of our regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to local communities and important causes. The award was created to honor the Adelson family’s long-term commitment to philanthropy and the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company. The winner will be announced Wednesday, April 25.

Here are a few words from Susan Ng of Marina Bay Sands on what Sands Cares and volunteering means to her:

I often volunteer with my neighborhood Resident’s Committee under the People’s Association in Sengkang, helping out with the administrative duties during the weekly Meet-The-People sessions, whenever I have the time. Prior to this, I was already volunteering in various neighborhood committees in different housing estates, depending on where I was living at that time. At Marina Bay Sands, under the Sands Cares umbrella, I have taken part in fun activities with beneficiaries from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS) and Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf). We get involved in fun and interactive activities such as painting tote bags together or distributing groceries to underprivileged families. I have also helped out at volunteer welfare organizations such as Willing Hearts and AWWA, packing and distributing food for the underprivileged and needy families.

My first volunteer experience with Sands Cares was in 2015. It was during Marina Bay Sands’ annual Sands for Singapore Charity Festival. As part of the Festival, there was a charity walk, called the Community Chest Heartstrings Walk, where thousands of people signed up to walk around the Marina Bay area for a good cause. I remember wearing my yellow volunteer shirt, and I played with a band to cheer the participants on. I was happy to have been part of the event, as it gave me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I could bring happiness and joy to others in a simple way. The events and activities that Sands Cares organizes allows Team Members to give back to society. Even if it is a small act of putting a smile on someone’s face, that has an impact, and it makes us feel good to be part of it. I feel proud to be part of a company that creates opportunities for its Team Members to volunteer. The Adelson’s’ spirit of giving back can even inspire other companies to do the same. I think the company sees value in giving back to society together, and it’s also a way for us to bond and grow together as a team by participating in such events and activities.

Seeing the smile on our beneficiaries faces lets me know I made a difference, even if it’s just a small act of helping them with a meal or doing an activity together. For my fellow Team Members – I know of some who have followed me on events, and enjoyed the experience so much that they have gone on to take part in volunteering activities outside of work as well. Some have even become volunteers with their Residents Committees or with their neighborhood Community Centers, which is very heartening to know.
