In honor of the 2nd annual Sheldon G. and Dr. Miriam Adelson Citizenship Award, presented by Sands Cares, we are featuring our 12 Sands Cares Heroes, finalists for the Adelson Citizenship Award. Las Vegas Sands established the award to recognize Team Members across all of our regions who have demonstrated a dedication to giving back to local communities and important causes. The award was created to honor the Adelson family’s long-term commitment to philanthropy and the legacy of giving that they have instilled in the company. The winner will be announced Wednesday, April 25.
Here are a few words from Wesley Garcia of The Venetian and The Palazzo on what Sands Cares and volunteering means to him:
Over the past year, I have volunteered for several organizations including Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation with their flagship program, Camp Cartwheel, which provides an opportunity for critically ill children and their siblings a chance to attend a medically supervised summer camp and forget about their illnesses and be kids for a week. I also volunteer for the Clark County Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT in Searchlight, Nevada, where we provide an all-hazards emergency services response for the community. I also volunteer with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as a traffic control volunteer, where we provide assistance to police officers and other department members in closing roads and diverting traffic during investigations and serious incidents.
Sands Cares has a huge impact on our community by showing Las Vegas that big casinos and corporations are more than just tourist attractions. We care about the community because this is our home and this is where we live, work, play and raise our families. Sands Cares is definitely important for my fellow Team Members and I because it is a way for us to give back to the community and the city. We all love being a part of this company, and when we get the opportunity to make a difference and shine as a company and as individuals, it makes everything worth it. It is an amazing feeling to know that the owner of this company, someone as well known as Dr. and Mr. Adelson, have the spirit of giving and encourage it in their own family and their company and reward and praise their Team Members for being involved with community projects and volunteerism.
My favorite volunteer opportunity has always been and will most likely always be Camp Cartwheel. These kids have been through so much in their short lives and they are definitely stronger than most of us are. One of the camp directors put it in a way that still gives me chills: “We come to camp and do something that modern medicine cannot do. We cure the illnesses of these kids for four days.” It is not currently a Sands Cares opportunity but I hope to change that in the near future. I think the company encourages us to volunteer because we are a part of this community. The rest of the world sees the Las Vegas Strip, but we see our family and friends and neighbors and we want to be there for them and show them we are more than just a casino. We want to see our community thrive and flourish. Sands Cares means making a difference in the community and striving to make it a better place for all. Volunteering makes me feel complete, full of life and accomplished. Making someone smile is what it’s all about.
