As part of the annual “Red Packets Recycling” initiative through Sands ECO360, the company’s global sustainability program, Sands China Ltd. (SCL) and Marina Bay Sands Team Members recycled more than 600,000 Ang Paos red envelope packets used for monetary gifts to give to children, family, friends, and coworkers as a symbol of good luck during Chinese New Year.
As one of the many ways to promote a sustainable lifestyle within Las Vegas Sands properties worldwide, this campaign was created to encourage and bring awareness to Team Members on the environmental benefits of recycling and to recycle from the heart, starting in the “Heart of House.” From February 21 to March 11, all eight hotels under SCL participated in the recycling initiative by placing bins in the “Heart of House” at each property. The properties totaled 47,000 red packets recycled by Team Members.
“From the ordering stage, all departments were encouraged to consider what they needed and not to order too much,” Stephanie Zhao, manager of Sustainability at SCL said. “Sands China Ltd. cares about not only recycling, but also reducing the waste generated from the beginning.”
During the recycling campaign from February 14 to March 9 at Marina Bay Sands, more than 2,000 Team Members participated and collected about 15,500 recycled red packets. An average of seven red packets per Team Member was recorded. The top five departments who contributed were Security Service, Rooms, Paiza Club, Housekeeping, and Convention Services, with a prize incentive for the department that recycled the most.
The design of the red packets are also important to note as the normal propitious icon was used instead of the yearly Chinese Zodiac to allow for the reuse of the packets. A few guests requested red packets for their events and chose to reuse recycled packets from the property, according to Zhao. A total of 1,300 recycled red packets were reused during guest events.
