Sands China Ltd. (SCL) delivered its annual Responsible Gaming Team Training Program at The Venetian Macao’s Adelson Advanced Education Centre for the fifth consecutive year in October. SCL is participating in Responsible Gaming 2017 with several initiatives supporting the annual event organized by the MSAR Social Welfare Bureau, the MSAR Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), and the University of Macau. The activities aim to further increase Team Members’ awareness of problem gambling and to foster responsible gaming behaviour.
“It is satisfying to see our Team Members gain and strengthen a practical set of skills and knowledge in the important area of responsible gaming through this training program,” Cetin Tanisman, Senior Vice President of Casino Operations for Sands China Ltd, said. “Minimizing the social impact of problem gaming in Macao is very important to Sands China and this program represents one of our successful efforts to that end.”
Launched in 2013, the Responsible Gaming Team Training Program is a global initiative of parent company Las Vegas Sands. It features new and enhanced elements each year and demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to responsible gaming. To date, over 430 participants have attended training sessions and nearly 2,400 hours of training have been provided through the annual campaign. Certificates were issued by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and presented to 80 participating Team Members, who came from gaming operations, security, and human resources.
“This is my second year participating in the training, and I’m still learning new things,” said one of the participants. “This program is well presented and enables me to do a better job and serve our guests better. I recommend it for both new trainees and those who have already taken the training before.”
The program is delivered by Professor Bo J. Bernhard, executive director of the UNLV International Gaming Institute, along with Sands China’s in-house trainer Romeu Júlio do Espírito Santo, who completed the Macao Responsible Gambling Advisor (MRGA) and Train the Trainer last year. Attendees were educated on the behaviors of problem gamblers, how to provide appropriate information and assistance on responsible gaming, and the application procedures of the self-exclusion and third-party exclusion programs.
SCL set up notice boards promoting the Responsible Gaming 2017 initiatives of the MSAR government and local community organizations at all of its properties in Macao. Video screens in the properties’ back-of-house areas are also showing Sands China’s “Let’s Support Responsible Gaming” promo clip. SCL also offered a responsible gaming quiz for Team Members, with questions on topics like probability, self-exclusion, and responsible gambling behaviour, with nearly 6,000 Team Members taking the quiz.
Sands China, along with Las Vegas Sands, remains committed to the personal well-being of its guests and recognizes the importance of responsible gaming to the Macao community. Sands China launched the program 2004 and was a pioneer in Macao in establishing its comprehensive responsible gaming program in 2007 with the goals of contributing to the continuous development of the Macao community, bearing corporate responsibility in addressing social issues and developing an environment and a culture of responsible gaming in Macao.
