Recently Las Vegas Sands’ award-winning global sustainability program, Sands ECO360, and its learning and development program, Sands Academy, offered Team Members a workshop about recycling. Rachel Lewison of the Bureau of Waste Management conducted the workshop, teaching attendees the importance of recycling and knowing how the process works.
“It’s important to understand where things go when we throw it away,” she said. “There is a landfill about 20 miles north of Las Vegas that most of our trash goes to. Once it goes there, the trash emits gas which then affects our air and ground water. Trash can stay in a landfill for 250 years.”
The company, through its global sustainability program, Sands ECO360, currently has an established recycling goal of 50 percent, with a goal in 2020 to recycle 60 percent of its waste from the properties in Las Vegas. Las Vegas Sands has also focused on reducing waste in the employee dining rooms, where food is separated from other waste and then leftover food is transported to a local pig farm.
“Sands is very sustainable,” Lewison said. “Sands does a spectacular job at reducing waste and recycling. The company is green and you show it in a different light through all of your initiatives. It is so important to reduce your waste, reuse as much as you can before you throw something away, and recycle your items.”
The workshop also covered food waste where Lewison said imperfect produce is thrown out since most consumers will not buy something that is not the right shape or color. Food that is not sold immediately goes into landfills across the country since farmers will not bother transporting it to grocery stores knowing the general public won’t buy it at their local store.
“It is so important to be mindful when you take food whether here at the employee dining hall or at the grocery store,” Marc Komatsu, sustainability manager for The Venetian and The Palazzo, said. “When you stop being wasteful with food, you are diverting food from becoming a greenhouse gas. Composting is one of the only solutions to reducing food waste by using it for your gardening at home. Food waste is one of the biggest efforts we are trying to combat.”
