Sands Prioritizes Health, Safety and Well-Being for its People

Promoting the health, safety and well-being of Team Members, partners and guests is a core component of the People pillar in Sands’ corporate responsibility program. This commitment is interwoven into many facets of the company, from rigorous safety practices to programs that address mental, physical and social wellness.

Over the past few years, Sands’ efforts to protect and promote health, safety and well-being have centered on providing extensive COVID-19 measures, protocols and procedures to address the varying situations around the globe. Beyond following local social distancing and mask mandates in each region and providing rigorous protocols for cleaning and disinfecting, Sands resorts also have delivered significant support to help its regions address the pandemic. From serving as quarantine sites to hosting mass vaccination clinics, Sands resorts have contributed thousands of hours of service and in-kind contributions to help communities stay safe and healthy.

Sands also developed new offerings to help its business clients navigate the pandemic’s challenges. Both Marina Bay Sands and Sands China have established hybrid broadcast studios that provide in-person and virtual experiences to keep meeting and conference attendees safe.

Marina Bay Sands launched the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry’s first state-of-the-art hybrid broadcast studio in August 2020. Designed to accommodate a live audience of up to 50 people, the studio offers broadcast-quality live-streaming capabilities, hologram functionality and mixed reality solutions, providing clients with a holistic ecosystem to co-create and deliver impactful and well-designed hybrid meetings for their communities. Marina Bay Sands then built three more hybrid broadcast studios to cater to mid- to large-size events. For its efforts to push the boundaries in delivering best-in-class experiences, Sands Expo and Convention Centre was recognized with the Outstanding Event Venue Experience award at the Singapore Tourism Awards for the eighth time in 2022.

Modeled after the Marina Bay Sands offering, Sands China’s hybrid meeting space at The Londoner Macao launched in 2022 and was the first of its kind in Macao. The extended reality studio, Smart Stage, provides professional, broadcast-quality live-streaming and hologram functionality to create engaging events and experiences that allow meeting and convention presenters to safely conduct events in virtual, hybrid or in-person formats.

Beyond pandemic response, Sands’ ongoing health and safety initiatives are fully integrated into all facets of the business to ensure excellence in the guest experience and provide a high-quality working environment for Team Members and partners. The company continually strives to advance its standards by incorporating the latest practices and certifications.

For example, the Sands Expo and Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands was the first venue in Asia to receive the Healthy Venue Gold accreditation from the World Obesity Federation, a lead partner to global agencies on obesity, including the World Health Organization. To achieve this rating, Sands Expo integrated wellness into conferences by prioritizing healthier eating, activities and workplace health to improve the overall delegate experience and increase meeting productivity. Efforts included introducing menu selections that use 30 percent less oil, sugar and salt, as well as low-sugar and low-fat options; providing spaces for standing meetings; organizing fitness and relaxation sessions; and incorporating outdoor activities into overall event programming.

Sands also places a high priority on promoting mental health for Team Members and guests. To engage the community during Covid-19 pandemic quarantines, the ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands hosted a series of online programs such as the Art of Being Calm, a monthly wellness initiative that featured hands-on activities and engaging discussions that explored how simple art tools could be used to find peace and serenity amid turbulent times. These programs took viewers through the ABCs of Mighty Meditating, Doodling Instead of Dueling, Decluttering and Sleep Hygiene, among other topics.

In 2022, the museum also introduced the Season of Mental Wellbeing, a year-long series of thoughtfully curated exhibitions, education activities and public programs that raised awareness about mental health through workshops, talks, films, drop-in activities and masterclasses. Serving as a culmination of this season, the museum launched MENTAL: Colours of Wellbeing– an interactive, bold and dynamic exhibition co-curated with Science Gallery Melbourne. Running through February 26, 2023, it features 24 artworks and large-scale installations that explore diverse perspectives and invite visitors to reflect on what mental health means to them.

In Macao, Sands China focuses on promoting a family-friendly environment as a means of encouraging Team Member well-being. For example, the company has hosted events that enable Team Members to enjoy experiences with their loved ones, such as The Venetian Macao’s 15th anniversary carnival this past year and a junior chef workshop series in which parents and children learned to make seasonal recipes together.
