Sands Updates Science-Based Target, Pledging to Reduce Company Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 17.5%

In keeping with our company commitment to sustainability and managing environmentally responsible properties around the world, Sands supports and is aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTI). As part of that commitment, we have officially updated our science-based target, pledging to reduce company greenhouse gas emissions by 17.5%, by the year 2025.

The SBTI is driving ambitious corporate climate action by helping some of the world’s largest companies cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with climate science. Through Sands ECO360, our global sustainability initiative, we have an overarching commitment to ensure we build, operate and maintain environmentally responsible Integrated Resorts around the world. Combined with our support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, setting a newly updated SBTI-approved science-based target is an extension of our robust commitment to sustainable resorts.

“Reducing our energy consumption and sourcing more sustainable energy are two of the most meaningful ways we can minimize our environmental footprint,” said Katarina Tesarova, Sands senior vice president of global sustainability. “With our updated science-based target, Sands is focusing on increasing the use of renewable energy certificates globally and reducing absolute consumption. Small, on-site renewable energy systems at each of our properties in Las Vegas, Macao and Singapore further help us reduce emissions.”

New technology and innovative systems are further helping us drive reductions. “We have instituted smart building systems at many of our resorts to help monitor our spaces to identify energy inefficiencies in real time,” said Tesarova. “For example, if a meeting space is over-cooled, or we have lights on in an empty room, our smart systems can relay that information to engineers who are able to remedy the issue.”

All of these steps, along with our continued commitment to achieving our science-based target, are helping Sands reduce our carbon footprint: “The Science Based Target Initiative is the gold standard in setting emissions reduction goals that are aligned with the best climate science available. Our new target to reduce emissions by 17.5% is yet another tool in our pursuit of a more sustainable future.”
