First Group of Singaporean Students Receive Sands Hospitality Scholarship Program Awards

In early July, Sands and Marina Bay Sands honored the first 19 Singapore students selected to receive scholarships through the $1 million Sands Hospitality Scholarship Program.

Recipients represented three Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs), including Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic. Three other IHLs, including Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Singapore Institute of Technology, will be selecting students in the coming months.

Sands and Marina Bay Sands announced last fall they would jointly establish the $1 million scholarship program through Sands Cares to help build a pipeline of new talent for the hospitality industry in Singapore. Ultimately, the Sands Hospitality Scholarship Program will benefit more than 100 Singaporean students pursuing hospitality or tourism-related courses of study, aiming to encourage the country’s brightest talent to consider a career in the hospitality industry.

The celebratory event at Marina Bay Sands featured remarks from resort leaders, including Christine Sheares, vice president of food and beverage; Bede Berry, vice president of hotel operations; Juliette Lim, vice president of talent and Genevieve Lim, director of MICE management. At the end of the ceremony, students also enjoyed a live demonstration by Marina Bay Sands chefs as they created an assortment of desserts for event attendees to enjoy.

“The Sands Hospitality Scholarship Program is designed to advance hospitality careers in Singapore to capitalize on the tremendous tourism growth projected over the coming years,” said Paul Town, chief operating officer at Marina Bay Sands. “This initiative also extends the long-standing commitment by Sands and Marina Bay Sands to support Singapore’s economic and tourism goals, as well as the company’s global ambition to help build a strong future workforce in our industry.”

The Sands Hospitality Scholarship Program investment is part of the company’s target to invest $200 million in workforce development by 2025. Last year, Sands contributed $56 million to workforce development initiatives for a cumulative total of $113 million since 2021, putting the company past the halfway point toward its 2025 goal.
